The Office of Veterans Affairs offers many programs to assist veterans
and their dependents attending college. The following is a summary
of those programs and their requirements.
CHAPTER 30 (Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty): Individuals who paid in $1200.00
to the program while on active duty. Recipients receive $894.00 a
month for full-time status in school if they have served less than three years, or $1101.00 a month for full
time status if they have served for three years or longer. Some individuals
will receive more if granted a "kicker" (i.e.: Army College Fund)
and some less if attendance is less than full time. To activate Chapter
30 G.I. Bill it is necessary to fill out Application 22-1990 and provide
a certified copy of DD-214 (form 4). Recipients are required to fill
out a "VA Request Form" once registered, every semester and provide
all paperwork to the school's VA Office. Recipients are required

CHAPTER 1606 (Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve):
Individuals commit to a 6-year enlistment in the Military Reserves or
National Guard. Recipients receive $317.00 a month for full-time status.
This amount may vary for the same reasons as above. To activate Chapter
1606 fill out Application 22-1990 and provide a notice of basic eligibility
(NOBE) from the drilling unit. Provide these and a "VA Request Form"
once registered to the school's VA Office.
CHAPTER 35 (Survivors' and Dependents' Educational
Assistance): Individuals who are dependents of Veterans deemed 100% totally
and permanently disabled service-connected or killed in action may be
eligible. Recipients receive $881.00 a month for full-time status. Less
than full-time enrollment will reduce this amount. To check eligibility
it is necessary to fill out Application 22-5490 and a "VA Request Form"
once registered to the school's VA Office. Dependents may be eligible
for Kentucky War-Orphans tuition under one of the following statutes:
KRS 164.505: Applicant may be eligible if veteran was killed in action
during a wartime period or died as the result of a service connected
disability incurred while serving during a wartime period provided the
veteran's home of record upon entry into the Armed Forces was the Commonwealth
of Kentucky. KRS 164.515: Veteran must be a Kentucky resident. Veteran
must be rated 100% permanently and totally disabled, rated as 100% disabled
for compensation purposes, or provide medical evidence showing permanent
and total disability for a period of at least thirty (30) days prior
to death if this evidence is signed by a physician licensed to practice.
Applicant is eligible for 45 months of training; training until they
receive a degree; or training until twenty-sixth (26) birthday. Contact
the VA Office for an application. Recipients are required to fill
out a "VA Request Form" once registered, each semester.
CHAPTER 31 (Vocational Rehabilitation): Veterans
deemed 20% disabled or greater may be eligible. Recipients receive tuition,
books, and a monthly allotment based on the number of dependents. For more information
contact the Louisville Veterans Affairs Office at 1-800-827-1000. Recipients
are required to fill out a "VA Request Form" once registered,
each semester.
CHAPTER 1607 (Reserve Educational Assistance
Program): Individuals who were activated after 9-11-01 are either eligible
for education benefits or increased benefits. Eligible reservists or
National Guard members may get education benefits while in an approved
training program. For more information, click here.

once registered, each semester.
All
classwork must meet requirements of student's chosen program. Any changes
in a class load should be reported to the VA Office to avoid over payments.
